The challenges of only speaking English.
Positives:
- Shows respect
- Able to connect
Many disasters and joys.
Disaster:
Using a translator to a company in Brazil. Responses were strange from senior members of the company. Translator was miscommunicating both parties.
Joy:
In Rio, having a translator that was effective was much better. The power of a competant translator is such a help.
What is missing from my meetings where English isn't the main language?
- Body language. Have to focus on what he hears.
- Meeting are not normally one-on-one. Miss value of the side conversations, as the translator can only translate the main thread.
How do I get by with only English?
- Get to know the people (build friendships), so it is easier to let the blunders slide.
Problems with translators?
- Not all behaviour as translators. Sometimes, translating is replaced by interpretation.
Too old (or lazy) to learn a language now.
What language would he learn? Not sure, but there is definitely a benefit to learning any language.
Reflection
A very interesting and helpful perspective to hear from. Shows the importance of building relationships. We have been very monolingul in New Zealand for a long time, and globalisation is changing that.
This is my blog to show that I meet, with evidence, the Practising Teacher Criteria (PTC) as well as my teaching journey. The headings at the top provide general information about each criteria. The labels on the righthand side will provide the posts that are relevant to the specific criteria. Enjoy.
